Cooking Grain - The basics
Cooking grain is very simple. Although it may take a little time to soften the hard kernels into a soft edible texture, there are only a few simple steps.
Cooked grain:
-
Rinse the grain before cooking.
-
Cover generously with water, add a pinch of salt to taste (optional), bring to boil and simmer for about 45 minutes until soft. OR to speed up the process you can pre-soak the grain for a about 4-5 hours or overnight and then boil & simmer till soft, about 20 minutes.
-
This cooked grain will be ready to use as an alternative to rice or to sprinkle on salads.
-
Cooked grain can store up to a week when kept in an airtight container in the fridge. This is handy if you want to use the grain for breakfast recipes. It would save time in the morning.
